Best Wash and Go Gel’s for Type 4 Hair

best wash and go gels

I try many gel’s on a regular basis for my wash and go’s, but my favorite products for the style are few. My hair is mostly type 4b, with a 4c and a little 4a thrown in. Which means my hair coils and waves are very prone to frizz (especially in humid climates), but the wash n go is till a great option for my hair type. I am often asked which gel’s are my favorite, so I thought I would share my take on the best wash and go gels for type 4 hair.

The Criteria

  • Enough hold for the style to lastย at least four days
  • Does not block out moisture
  • Helps to blocks frizz
  • Works well with leave-in products
  • Crunch can be scrunched out
  • Leaves volume
  • No Alcohol
  • No Mineral oil or petroleum

I generally do not go for light hold gel’s because there is immediate frizz, so the style really only lasts for a day. I find medium to strong hold gel’s work best with the exception of two light hold gel’s that magically work. My favorite gel’s, in no particular oder, include:

  1. Eco Styler Krystal Gel
  2. Super Wet Gel
  3. Wetline Xtreme Gel
  4. Ampro Olive Oil Gel
  5. Fantasia IC Gel
  6. Kinky Curly Curling Custard
  7. Moptop Curly Hair Custard

I am currently trying puddings, hold creams, and custards to pair with lighter hold gel’s for possible longevity, but only continued experimenting over time will tell what works for a great wash n go.

What are your favorite wash n go gel stylers?

Man I can’t even count how many gels I have tried. Somehow the only gel that works on my hair is KCCC followed by CRN curlmaker. I would say I am the only type 4 natural who cannot tolerate ecostyler but I have actually ran across 2 more people on social media whose hair is pick too. The only other gel I have been itching to try is the mane choice biotin gel/products, because I am a sucker for failed experiments i guess. What i don’t understand, is that the 2 times I have gone to a hair salon for a wash and go (which they call finger style), they have only used creams and butters and the style had shrinkage but lasted a week or almost a week! Yet when I try cream wash and gos with all my fabulous cream stylers (TGIN, CRN, Eden body works), it doesn’t seem to hold the curl etc

That’s so interesting! I used to dislike ECO Styler as well, but one day it just worked for me (could be due to the fact that they changed the formula a year or two ago). I wonder what products they use at the salon and how the ingredients in those products compare to what you are using, hmm…… The wash n go is definitely a style that works different for every person, but at least you know a combo of products that will work for you. I hope you are able to find others in the future *fingers crossed*

Thanks for listing your faves and your criteria for what makes a good fave. My faves are: Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic, MopTop Custard, Koils by Nature Gel, and Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I am interested in trying Camille Rose Curlmaker, since I love her moisture creams/butters.

I still need to try UFD. Thanks for the reminder!
