Before social distancing, I owned a few plants, but during these last four months, my collection of house plants has exploded.

In the past, my go-to house plant has been some form of succulent. They are often recommended as an “easy” starter plant to care for indoors.

Well, I killed many succulents before I got the hang of them.

Now I own over 30 house plants and can say that there are easier plants to care for that also add to my home decor.

5 Hearty House Plants

Actually, I now have five recommendations in particular for those looking to buy plants for their home.

1

When a person is searching for a lush plant that will vine and add green to their space, I recommend a variety of Pothos.

Unlike Ivy, the Pothos grows at a bit slower rate so as to not take over your indoor space. However, the plant will vine easily with simple care.

Pothos come with variety in appearance, but produce dense vining with proper care. Indoors, I water my marble queen Pothos once a week and fertilize with Espoma Indoor plant food once a month. This plant can survive well in low light, but I find it thrives in medium light and will grow significantly thicker vines.

2

For the person who needs a hearty plant that really doesn’t require much care, I recommend the ZZ plant.

The unique look of this plant’s foliage makes it a great focal point for home decor.

During its small to medium stage, I like to keep my ZZ plant either on a side table or in a window. However, I anticipate putting it in my entryway once it gets taller.

This stunner thrives in low and medium. Plus, I can let the plant completely dry out (neglect the plant) and it will still remain hearty.

Ideally, I water my ZZ plant once a week and fertilize it once a month during the growing season. I keep it in low light but have kept it in medium light as well with no issue.

Sometimes, my friends want a plant with large leaves and rich green color, and the rubber plant perfectly fits the bill.

The rubber plant has large leaves that sit both inward and outward to create a full look.

Its deep green leaves add rich color to any room which stunning next to leather or neutral-colored palette.

I actually keep my rubber plant in my room next to my white dresser to add rich color to the neutral palette of my room. Plus, it’s a favorite of my collection so I like seeing it in my living space every day.

My room receives low light and my rubber plant isn’t particularly thirsty, so I water every two weeks to keep gnats away from my living space.

Personally, I like to have a few plants with colorful leaves to add a little contrast to my collection.

The Chinese evergreen lady valentine adds a splash of rich pink to provide a focal point to home decor.

My aglaonema lady valentine sits on a shelf or side table for added home decor. It does well in low light, so it doesn’t have to sit in front of a window to thrive.

The beautiful pink tone mixed in with the green adds the perfect pop of color to my bedroom. Though my Chinese evergreen is not directly facing the sun, this plant is unfurling new leaves every week.

I care for my plant by watering every two weeks and fertilizing once a month in the growing season.

Lastly, for the person who needs a plant that they will forget frequently or the absolute beginner, you need a snake plant.

The snake plant has unique foliage that rises straight up and grows fairly tall. However, this hearty plant will survive neglect, overwatering, and low light.

The heartiest of my plants, the sansevieria can be found in most places and is popular in the house plant world.

I prefer the black gold variety, but if you want a more unique focal piece for your home, try the rattlesnake plant.

The snake plant is also great for beginners because, with simple care, the plant will easily grow and provide a first plant win.

Warning: plants are addictive.

Nonetheless, these five house plants will add a unique touch to any space while purifying your air.
